We’re getting close to completion on our home addition, we call it “the beach house.” You see, it’s totally different from the rest of the house, which is all natural knotty pine varnished wood, subtle colors of tans and rich browns. The newest part of the house will be all whites and off whites, it will be our master bedroom and office space. No, it will not “flow.” The only thing flowing about it will be the floor, which will be the same tile throughout the house. Hopefully, it will resemble an old beach cottage. It’s the compromise my husband made when I decided I wanted to redo all the natural wood in the main house, making everything white. I think he turned a little “whiter” haired as I was going through this phase. He tried to seek professional reinforcement from the kids. I’d hear him on the phone with one of my daughters or my son, saying, “you need to talk to your Mother, she has this awful idea of painting everything!”
I can’t get enough of the Beach House! I crawl through what used to be a window to get “next door.” One of these days it will be cut open as a doorway. My husband is working on the inside completion, the panelling, sheetrock, tiling, etc. The shop vac lives next door right now, and I’m compelled to vacuum all the time, cleaning up after he’s been sawing and making a mess. If you read my Sand Bucket last week, you’ll understand how I’m also looking forward to another bed to store stuff under. Simple pleasures…

We’ve watched the progress with interest from the street over, wondering if you were adding an in-law suite or just what. Really enjoy your journal. And you’re right about those simple pleasures.
Cute article! It is nice to hear this construction phase is going well. You ought to chronicle the differences between this phase and that of the rebuilding of the house after Ike. Kudos should go to those contractors you have had great experience with and the things you have learned from past contractors. Construction can go smoothly if you find the right and honest trades!! Congrats on the new “Beach House”!!
