From November 1 to December 14, Texas anglers will find the flounder season closed. This annual closure, implemented by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD), is critical for conserving and bolstering the flounder population. The decision, first made in 2021, comes as a response to significant declines in flounder numbers since the 1980s. The closure coincides with the peak spawning period for flounder, allowing females to remain in the water and reproduce without the pressure of fishing. This strategic move aims to increase the spawning success and, ultimately, the population’s sustainability over time. During this period, anglers are prohibited from both recreational and commercial flounder fishing to give these fish the opportunity to mature and contribute to population recovery.
TPWD’s conservation efforts reflect a commitment to maintaining Texas’ rich fishing heritage while ensuring future generations can enjoy and benefit from abundant flounder stocks. As fish populations face various ecological pressures, such measures are vital for fostering a balanced ecosystem and a sustainable fishing industry along the Texas coast.
