Why should I help the poor?

Oh, the joys of those who are kind to the poor. The Lord rescues them in times of trouble. The Lord protects them and keeps them alive. He gives them prosperity and rescues them from their enemies. The Lord nurses them when they are sick and eases their pain and discomfort. ~ Psalm 41:1-3 NLT

He will rescue the poor when they cry to him, he will help the oppressed, who have no one to defend them. He feels pity for the weak and the needy, and he will rescue them. He will save them from oppression and from violence, for their lives are precious to him. ~ Psalm 72:12-14 NLT

A greedy person tries to get rich quick, but it only leads to poverty. Greed causes fighting; trusting in the Lord leads to prosperity. Whoever gives to the poor will lack nothing. But a curse will come upon those who close their eyes to poverty. ~ Proverbs 28:22,25,27 NLT

About this week's promise

To be poor means that something is lacking from our life.
The Bible focuses primarily on two kinds of poverty-people who are in need of basic necessities (like food and clothing) and people who are in need of God (for they lack the Holy Spirit's presence in their life). We are called-commanded-to help both of these kinds of people as much as we possibly can.

Stop the Bloodthirsty Pests Before They Bite

It's miserable having to fend off mosquitos while trying to enjoy the outdoors, and although store-bought mosquito repellent can be a very effective way to get rid of mosquitoes, store-bought mosquito repellent can leave behind an unpleasant smell and make the skin feel oily or sticky. Besides the itchy red welts caused by mosquito bites, mosquitoes are known carriers of the West Nile virus. How can people effectively get rid of mosquitoes so they can enjoy the outdoors? Are there home remedies that really work to get rid of mosquitoes?
There are a number of home remedies to get rid of mosquitoes, and these home remedies actually work. These home remedies are simple, effective, and best of all, they are relatively inexpensive. Try the following home remedies next time you plan on going outdoors, and find the home remedies that work best for you in an effort to get rid of mosquitoes before they bite.
Break Wind
As strange as it may sound, creating wind can help get rid of mosquitoes if you're sitting on an outdoor deck or patio. The wind created isn't that of a flatulent kind, but the wind produced by an electric fan. If you're going to be sitting outdoors, if possible, arm yourself with an electric fan. Positioning yourself in front of a fan will discourage mosquitoes from landing and biting.
Crack Open a Beer
Drinking a beer won't keep the mosquitoes away, but beer can help create a thirst-quenching diversion. In all seriousness, spraying beer combined with a couple of other key ingredients around bushes, and on grass and weeds, will get rid of the little pests. Simply combine equal amounts of flat beer, antiseptic mouthwash, and Epsom salt. Place this mixture in a garden sprayer that attaches to a hose, and spray away. This mixture is said to effectively get rid of mosquitoes, and it is a cheaper and much safer alternative to commercial products that contain harmful chemicals.

"Mosquito Cocktail"

Mix to nuke mosquitos:

3oz 10% permethrin (NOTE: 2 Tablespoons- 1 oz.)

1 cup lemon dish soap

1 cup lemon ammonia
Put mixture in a hose end sprayer and apply to yard at 3 to 6 tablespoons per
gallon.  It kills everything that flies - be sure to read the warning label on
the permethrin.  Do not breath it, do not walk in the grass until it's dry and always work with the wind at your back.
Pre-Ike, I could get away with treating the once every 6-8 weeks if there was not much rain.

"If you treat an individual as if he were what he ought to be and could be, he will become what he ought to be and could be." ~ Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Bolivar Peninsula Community Outreach

There is good news regarding the Bolivar Peninsula Community Outreach (BPCO) organization.

BPCO, an IRS designated 501C3 organization, has rented the 2nd Going facility located at 1050 Bay Vue from Bay Vue United Methodist Church.  The ministries of the 2nd Going and BPCO are being combined.  The clothing resale operation will resume and food will be distributed from the food pantry to qualified individuals and families from the same location.  This will result in efficient utilization of volunteers and resources to better serve the community.  (CLICK HERE to view more details)

CAJUN CORNER

One day, Boudreaux was walking down Main Street when he saw his buddy Thibodeaux driving a brand new pickup.  Boudreaux pulled up to him with a wide grin.

"Thibodeaux", where'd you git that truck?'

'Tammie give it to me.' Thibodeaux replied.

'She give it to ya?

I know'd she wuz kinda sweet on ya, but a new truck?'

'Well, Boudreaux, let me tell you what happened.

We wuz drivin' out on County Road 6, in the middle of nowheres.

Tammie pulled off the road, put the truck in 4-wheel drive, and headed into the woods.

She parked the truck, got out, threw off all her clothes and said,

"Thibodeaux", take whatever you want.'

So I took the truck!'

"Boudreaux", you a smart man! Them clothes woulda never fit you!'
