Bolivar Peninsula Texas - reporting from Caplen, Texas - .....We're OPEN for business!!  Roads are still being cleared today, pushing the sand and debris away from Hwy 87.  Yesterday, Thursday, the surf was up to the trash cans county installed on the beach fronts.  Today, surf is pushed back just a bit.  Cloudy, with a slight chance of scattered storms for the peninsula and wind coming in from the east.

BUT, wow, what a beautiful beach.  The pictures below were taken today around 12 noon.  Most of the beaches are on the Caplen area.  The surf has packed the beaches and they are waiting for YOU to come by for a visit.  No tar on beaches, no oil on beaches, just plenty of shells for the picking.

Enjoy your holiday weekend,

PC

This is Galveston County Emergency Management. State Highway 87 is now open for westbound traffic. However, eastbound traffic will continue to be escorted until the water is cleared and the road is safe. Thank you for your patience as we deal with the lingering effects of Tropical Storm Alex.

I wish I could give you good news.  The National Weather Service anticipates that the tide will stay elevated until the afternoon.  There is a strong east wind pushing the high water over the highway.  Plus they expect the rain to continue through Saturday. I hope they are wrong and people can get on with their holiday weekend.  Good luck and be careful.

Office of Emergency Management has contacted all of Galveston County that is on the call registry for Emergency Situations.  Highway 87 between High Island and Gilchrist is now at least 1 foot underwater.  All residents of the Bolivar Peninsula are urged to find another route if you must venture out.   Below are pictures taken earlier this morning.

"Forecast for Alex: which model should you trust?

While the track forecast for Alex today through Monday is fairly well-assured, the longer range forecast has become highly uncertain. An increasing number of our reliable models are now indicating Alex may take a more northerly track beginning on Tuesday, with possible landfall on the Texas coast near Galveston on Friday (according to the 8am run of the GFS model) or into western Louisiana on Wednesday (the 8am run of the Canadian model.) The key question remains how Alex will react to the trough of low pressure expected to swing down over the Eastern U.S. on Monday and Tuesday. Most of the models were predicting that the trough would not be strong enough to swing Alex to the north, and several of them continue to predict this. The 8am runs of the NOGAPS and ECMWF models, for example, take Alex into the Gulf coast of Mexico 150 miles south of Texas, on Wednesday. The GFDL and HWRF models split the difference, with the GFDL predicting a Thursday landfall in southern Texas near Brownsville, and the HWRF predicting a Thursday landfall near Corpus Christi. Morris Bender of the GFDL group has just provided me the track forecast from an improved experimental version of the GFDL that shows landfall between Corpus Christi and Galveston. So which model should you trust? Last year, the best performing models at the 3 - 4 day forecast range were the GFS and the Canadian, and these are the models that are currently calling for the more northerly track towards the upper Texas coast and Louisiana. Residents of those areas should review their hurricane preparedness plans and anticipate that Alex could make landfall as early as Wednesday in their vicinity. Residents of the Mexican coast south of Brownsville should make similar plans, as Alex could just as easily hit there.
Re-intensification of Alex is likely once the center of Alex moves offshore, though this will initially be slow due to the current disorganized state of the storm and the relatively low total ocean heat content in the 100-mile-wide stretch of water on the west side of the Yucatan Peninsula. Once Alex moves more than 100 miles from the Yucatan, total heat content of the ocean increases substantially, and Alex will have the opportunity to intensify significantly. A longer time spent over water will give Alex more of a chance to strengthen, and it is possible Alex could intensify into a major hurricane if landfall is delayed until Thursday or Friday. However, Alex's intensification may be limited the farther north it gets, as water vapor satellite images show plenty of dry air over Texas that might interfere with development. Wind shear might also be an issue for Alex if it pushes far enough north, and a slow-moving storm tends to pull up cold water from the depths, limiting intensification. In short, Alex has the potential to intensify into a major hurricane, but there are plenty of roadblocks that make this only a 10% probability in my estimation."

What does God promise to those who obey?

Oh, the joys of those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or stand around with sinners, or join in with scoffers. But they delight in doing everything the Lord wants; day and night they think about his law. They are like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season without fail. Their leaves never wither, and in all they do, they prosper. ~ Psalm 1:1-3 NLT

Do What He Says

Believers who build their lives on a solid foundation are like the man whom a reporter found in the aftermath of Hurricane Andrew. Amid the devastation and debris, one house still stood firm on its foundation. The owner was cleaning up when the reporter approached him. "Sir, why is your house the only one still standing?" the reporter asked.
"I built this house myself," the man replied. "I built it according to the Florida state building code. I was told that a house built according to code could withstand a hurricane. I did, and it did! I suppose no one else around here followed the code."
If you have built your life on Jesus Christ and His teaching, you will stand when the storms of life hit. If you are not merely a hearer but a doer of the His Word, you will endure. The true Christian-the one who has built his or her life on the right foundation-will stand the test.

Bolivar Peninsula Community Outreach

There is good news regarding the Bolivar Peninsula Community Outreach (BPCO) organization.

BPCO, an IRS designated 501C3 organization, has rented the 2nd Going facility located at 1050 Bay Vue from Bay Vue United Methodist Church.  The ministries of the 2nd Going and BPCO are being combined.  The clothing resale operation will resume and food will be distributed from the food pantry to qualified individuals and families from the same location.  This will result in efficient utilization of volunteers and resources to better serve the community.  (CLICK HERE to view more details)

JANE LONG FESTIVAL

Attention Arts and Crafts Vendors! A JANE LONG FESTIVAL IS BEING ORGANIZED FOR  OCTOBER 2010  We are looking for vendors and on site demonstrations of early crafts and/or homemaking  remedies that were in use and /or popular around the turn of the century, ie, making horseshoes, soap,  canning, woodcrafts, quilting , banjo/guitar players, mimes, etc.. Vendors are asked to submit a description of their products or art work for approval  so as not to have too many  duplications. The purpose is to raise money  for improvements but mostly to create awareness of Fort Travis on Bolivar Peninsula so that it may become eligible for  Federal Funding  for major improvements and promotion.
A drama production will be presented about the life of Jane Long "The Mother of Texas" and vendors  are asked to dress  in costumes of the era..As well as those attending!
Thank you!

Tar Balls Tar balls have been found on Bolivar Peninsula beaches for a long time but with the oil spill there is concern that we will eventually get lots more. So if you find large tar balls please report them to GLO at their oil spill number 1-800-832-8224. They are trying to get base line data for our coast.

CAJUN CORNER

The Fastest Thing in the World

One day Boudreaux, his wife Clotile, Boudreaux's friend Pierre, and Pierre's wife Marie were talking. Clotile asked "Mais y'all, wat you tink is the most fastest ting in de world, huh?"

Pierre says, "Mais, Clotile, the fastest ting in the world is to tink a tought. Before you can tink a tought ... you've done tunk!"

Pierre's wife Marie thought about this some and she said "Mais, Pierre, I can tink of something faster den dat. I tink de fastest ting in the world is when you blink you eye. Before you can tink a tought, you've done blunked a blink."

After a while, Clotile says, "Mais I can tink of sometin faster den dat, I tink de fastest ting in de world is a light switch. When you flip dat switch, before you can tink a tought or before you blunk a blink, dat light comes on."

Boudreaux thinks about all this a while and says "Y'all are all wrong. De fastest ting in de world is diarrhea. One time I had dat diarrhea, and all of a sudden before I could tink, blink, or flip dat light on, I done messed in my pants! How bout dat?!"
