Increased Property Taxes???
Has
anyone besides us found that your home's appraised value for 2010 has increased
to even more than it was pre-Ike? The CAD seems to be
trying to make those of us with surviving homes make up the difference in property
tax losses from Ike.
I've
talked with Galveston County Tax Assessor/Collector Cheryl Johnson regarding
this. She will consider coming to the Peninsula
to teach a class on protesting your appraisal, but needs to know that
residents/property owners are interested. I believe she will
even do it on a weekend so that out-of-town property owners can
attend. If you're interested in her coming here to teach this
class, please contact her at 409-766-2481.
Several
years ago in Houston
we had a tremendous increase in the appraised value of our home. We
successfully protested it and prevented a hefty tax increase.

Fix your thoughts on what is true and honorable and

Watch your
diet
What would we expect of
someone who feeds only on fast food and unhealthy snacks filled with sugar and
fats? A healthy body? Long life? No, we would expect physical health to be
largely the product of physical intake. Is it any different in the spirit?
Modern culture is saturated
with unhealthy spiritual food - from the lusts of the flesh and the eyes, to
the human pride of the self-life, to elaborate and deceptive worldviews and
philosophies. Hundreds of television channels, dozens of newspapers and
magazines, unlimited cyberspace images, and a number of other media compete for
our attention. We let many of them actually win our attention. And much of what
we feed on is unhealthy. In our pursuit of wisdom, our minds often hunger for
genuine nutrition.
"You are what you
eat" applies not only in the physical world, but also in the spiritual.
There's no way to take in junk without becoming junky.
God calls us to watch our
diets. It pleases Him when we care for His temple, our bodies. But it pleases
HIm much more when we care for our minds. Our thought life is where His Spirit
most prefers to work, shaping uncluttered hearts and imparting wisdom to
uncluttered minds. Even so, we do not make a smooth highway for Him into our
souls. Through our entertainment, we let ourselves be bombarded by an incessant
PR campaign for the ways of the world. Find a balance. Watch what goes into
your mind. Without hindrance, let His thoughts nourish you.

Time, Energy, Imagination, and Information
Time, Energy, Imagination, and Information is all it takes to be successful at anything you set your mind to. You can save a ton of money by using these resources instead of paying a Builder to watch over your project. That may be worth it if you believe the old adage that time is money. I personally believe that if you break down that saying like a math problem you will find that it does not add up. "Is" in the mathematical world means equals. Therefore time is money means that time is equal to money. This makes no since to me as with time you can get more money but with all the money in the world you cannot buy more time. If you want to build multiple homes in your lifetime you will likely need to learn all the ins and outs of building in explicit detail. But if you are doing this once or even twice then paying 10% overhead and 10% profit to a builder or General Contractor on your project should be well worth the savings of Time, Energy, Imagination, and Information.
There are lots of examples of how builders will lower their cost and you may not notice until years down the road. Small things matter in a home building project that you may not know to even think about. Using 1/2" rebar in the slab vs. using 6x6 metal wire is a huge savings to a home builder yet will affect the long term durability of your slab. OSB is much cheaper than using plywood behind the siding (please use Hardi and not vinyl) or as the decking for the roof, but will not have the longevity of plywood. Particle board cabinets, door casings, crown molding, base boards, all look fine when first installed but are more likely to warp and mold than solid wood, plywood, or even plastic.
Knowing what to look for and being able to speak with confidence on what your wants are is vitally important to accomplish perfection in your home.

CAJUN CORNER
Boudreaux & the Game Warden:
This
Louisiana
game warden had been keeping an eye on the fishing docks, when after about a
week he noticed that Boudreaux had been coming back every day with a boat full
of fish. One day he starts to talk to Boudreaux as he's pulling his boat in.
The warden says,'Boudreaux, I been watchin you. I notice every day dat you been
comin' in wid a full load of fish. You must be havin some good luck? Eh?"
Boudreaux answers, "May yah, dem fish is easy to catch." The game
warden replies, "Well listen. I got me a day off comin next Saturday. I
was wondring, maybe I could go an fish wid you?" Boudreaux replies,
"May dat be no problem. Jus make shore you be here at dat 6 a.m. sharp.
Cause I gonna leave dis dock wid or widout you." "May I'll be here,
don't chu worry none about dat" answers the warden.
Saturday
comes and the game warden is waiting at the dock when Boudreaux pulls up and
puts his boat in the water. The game warden gets in and Boudreaux proceeds to
drive the boat out to the middle of the lake. At this point, Boudreaux shuts
off the engine and lets the boat glide to a stop. The game warden, who'd been
curious anyway, says to Boudreaux, "May Boudreaux, I been lookin aroun dis
boat, and I notice dat all you don brought was dis here ice-chest and dat
little brown paper bag under your seat. May, you don't even got no fishin
pole." Boudreaux answers, "May, dat be because dats all I need"
And he proceeds to pull a stick of dynamite out of the brown paper bag, lights
it, thows it in the water and watches it go boooom! All the fish in the area,
being stunned, float to the top of the water.
The warden, by this time, can't believe his eyes.
Half yelling, he says to Boudreaux, "May Boudreaux, I know we been knowin
each udder for a long time, but man, you can't be doing dat, especially wid me
being a game warden n all. May, dat's agin de law in a big way dat is."
Boudreaux, without say a word, calmly reaches down into the bag (with the
warden still rattling off), pulls out a stick, lights it, hands it to the
warden and says, "You gonna talk, or you gonna fish?"
