What a difference a Day Makes

What a difference a day can make.  Last week one day was windy and the next day calm.  It has been dark in the daytime and light during the night at full moon.  Cloudy and rainy one day and then beautiful, perfect summer weather.  Welcome to May

The Birds of High Island & Surrounding Sactuaries

Slideshow Photos by: Betty Cost

Betty and her friend Laura visit High Island every year all the way from California.  They enjoy watching all the colorful birds arrive in this area during the spring migration.  Every photo in this show of colorful plumage was taken right here in this local area.  Hoping to encourage some of our locals to get out an enjoy the gifts in our own backyard.

Thanks Betty, see ya next year.

JANE LONG FESTIVAL

Attention Arts and Crafts Vendors! A JANE LONG FESTIVAL IS BEING ORGANIZED FOR  OCTOBER 2010  We are looking for vendors and on site demonstrations of early crafts and/or homemaking  remedies that were in use and /or popular around the turn of the century, ie, making horseshoes, soap,  canning, woodcrafts, quilting , banjo/guitar players, mimes, etc.. Vendors are asked to submit a description of their products or art work for approval  so as not to have too many  duplications. Please include contact information.  Booth rent will be  very reasonable for this one day event. The purpose is to raise money  for improvements but mostly to create awareness of Fort Travis on Bolivar Peninsula so that it may become eligible for  Federal Funding  for major improvements and promotion.
A drama production will be presented about the life of Jane Long "The Mother of Texas" and vendors  are asked to dress  in costumes of the era..As well as those attending!
Thank you!

Do not be afraid

The Lord who created you says: "Do not be afraid, for I have ransomed you. I have called you by name; you are mine. When you go through deep waters and great trouble, I will be with you."  ~Isaiah 43:1-2 NLT

Two Margarets

Margaret MacLachlan and Margaret Wilson, Covenanters in Wigtown, Scotland, were tried for their faith on April 13, 1685, for refusing to take the Oath of Abjuration, which stated that the Church of God is a department of the State. Found guilty of rebellion, attending field meetings, and worshipping in places other than a church, they were ordered to receive their sentences on their knees. When they refused to bow before anyone but God, they were forced down to their knees and then were sentenced to death by drowning.

On May 11, 1685, the two faithful Margarets were tied to posts and staked in the sea as the tide was rising. The older Margaret (MacLachlan) was farther out. They were given many chances to recant their beliefs, but they stood firm and resolute.

Margaret MacLachlan remained silent, her eyes closed throughout the ordeal, communing with Christ until death. As the tide rose eighteen-year-old Margaret Wilson began to sing a Covenanter rendition of Psalm 25:7. Then, she recited from Romans 8: "We are more than conquerors through him that loves us...."

After the waves washed over her head, the soldiers pulled her out, pleading with her one last time to "pray for the king!" She prayed, but her pray was, "Lord, give him repentance, forgiveness, and salvation, if it be Thy holy will." The angry soldiers threw her back into the water, and she joined Margaret MacLachlan before the throne.

We may never face the rising tide of the sea, but the deep waters of trouble and loss can be just as overwhelming. How do you react when you feel you are about to drown in the rising tide of your own troubles?

Attitude of Gratitude

This was Brother Copeland's last message as he spoke as interim pastor of First Baptist Church of High Island, TX.  Bro. Jim and his wife, Molly are both Cardinal graduates from High Island High School years ago.  Jim was the son of the preacher of First Baptist Church and moved to High Island his freshman year. Jim & Molly dated all through Molly's high school years and then they married.  Jim Copeland has been interim pastor for the past 9 months at the First Baptist Church of High Island, Texas.

Pastor Richard Salee of Houston, Texas will join the congregation of First Baptist High Island beginning next Sunday, May 9th.  We welcome you, Pastor Salee.

Bro. Copeland, we want to thank you for keeping Faith in our lives.  We are forever in your debt.  You kept the word of God alive in our time of need.

South Louisiana Goes Wireless:

After having dug to a depth of 10 feet last year, New York scientists found traces of copper wire dating back 100 years and came to the conclusion, that their ancestors already had a telephone network more than 100 years ago.

Not to be outdone by the New Yorkers, in the weeks that followed, a California archaeologist dug to a depth of 20 feet, and shortly after, A Story in the LA Times read: " California archaeologists, finding of 200 year old copper wire, have concluded that their ancestors already had an advanced high-tech communications network a hundred years earlier than the New Yorkers"

One week later. A local newspaper in Baton Rouge reported the following:

"After digging as deep as 30 feet at the highest level near the Mississippi River, Boudreaux, a self-taught archaeologist, reported that he found absolutely nothing. Boudreaux has therefore concluded that 300 years ago, South Louisiana had already gone wireless".
